Roxy’s Recent Encounter with Essential Oils

Roxy’s Recent Encounter with Essential Oils

I want to tell you a little about my girl Roxy’s recent encounter with Essential Oils. Roxy is a mini Australian Shepherd pup that joined our family in July 2018. Roxy's recent encounter with essential oilsShe’s a sweet little thing, into all the normal trouble puppies get into, but very devoted to her people. As of this writing, she’s just become a A.C.K Puppy Star grad. (It’s possible there is a no-dogs-left-behind clause somewhere…)

Though our kiddos genuinely hoped we would choose to breed this little girl one day, my husband and I aren’t cut out for the breeding life. So we scheduled her a day of pampering at the vet prior to her 6-month birthday.

Rewind a little, and I’ll tell you I did lots of research to see whether I needed to be cautious about diffusing  essential oils with a new pet in the home. Lo and behold, there are numerous oils that are not healthy for dogs. So we don’t use them in Roxy’s area of our home. (To date, she still doesn’t realize upstairs exists!) But many of oils are considered a healthy support for dogs, so I began to diffuse those often, first getting her used to them by wearing them on my wrists.

Fast forward again to Roxy’s vet visit. It was not her favorite day. She came through surgery as well as she could, but was a very sad little bundle of fluff when she came home to us that evening. They gave us strict orders to keep her quiet and limit all activity for two weeks. Wait, what?? She’s a puppy! But that first day was easy – all she wanted to do was mope around and snuggle anyway.

Frankincense and Copaiba

I got thinking about how best to help her out and keep her relaxed while she recovered, so I texted a Young Living friend to ask for some ideas about diffusing for doggies. She reminded me about Frankincense (known for emotional support and promoting relaxation) and Copaiba (known for stress relief and wellness). Sure enough, these are safe for our pups. So, I decided to diffuse those in the main part of the house, near the sunroom where Roxy’s kennel is. I remembered that her sense of smell is FAR stronger than mine, so I kept it to just a couple of drops.  She slept like a baby that night, so I kept diffusing. For three days and nights I diffused that lovely blend. Each day, sweet Roxy was more alert and happy. By day 4, it was everything I could do to keep her from tearing around the house and playing like her normal puppy self.  I continued to diffuse at night to help her relax and rest.

It has been two and a half weeks since Roxy’s surgery. You’d never know she had slowed down even a pace, because she’s letting  joy loose all over the place! Other than gaining a little weight from walking and running less, she is back to her old self. Now we need to get back to our normal exercise schedule! I am pretty thankful for the timing of my PSK purchase to allow for Roxy’s recent encounter with essential oils. It helped us all chill out when we needed to.
